Series1


Harold Warnica Price. – [1890s]-1970. — 37.5 cm of textual records and photographs. – Harold Warnica Price, 1896-1975, was born to parents Frank DeMille Price, 1866-1937 and Ida Nancy Warnica. They had three other children – Arthur, Frank, and Ida Marion. Harold attended the University of Toronto during 1915-1916; then enlisted with the Royal Air Force. He was sent to the Middle East and served with the (British) Royal Flying Corps in Mesopotamia (Iraq) and Persia (Iran) during the remainder of the First World War. He took many photographs starting with his enlistment and voyage to the Middle East in June, 1917 through his departure in September, 1919 and voyage home. He was also in charge of aerial photography for his unit. After the war, he completed his Batchelor of Arts from the University of Toronto in 1921; and obtained his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland in 1924. He served in the Maryland National Guard in 1926-1927, and then returned to Ontario to take a job as a physician at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. In 1929, he joined the Calgary Associate Clinic in Calgary, Alberta and became a well-known pediatrician. During the Second World War, he was a medical officer at Currie Barracks. He retired from medical practice in 1961. In addition to his photography, Dr. Price’s other hobby was trail riding as a member and official doctor of the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies. He also enjoyed spending time at his Bar HP ranch in the Ghost River Valley. In 1930, he married Irene Elizabeth Gardiner. – Series consists of textual records and photographs relating to Harold Warnica Price’s military service; family, medical practice and personal life.

Gardiner Family. – [ca. 1870s-1970s]. — 9 cm of textual records and photographs. – Edward Parker Gardiner, 1862-1939, and his wife Mary Jane Meters Gardiner, 1868-1970, came to Calgary in 1911 with their family: Albert Edward Russell, Irene Elizabeth and Edward St. Claire. Son, Llewellyn Milton was born the following year. Prior to moving to Calgary, Edward Parker Gardiner was associated with music houses and church choirs in London, Ontario for 40 years. In Calgary, he was a member of the Haydon male quartet and leader of the Bible Institute Baptist and other church choirs. Mary Jane Meters Gardiner lived to be 102 years old, writing her memoirs at age 85. She was friends with a number of prominent people including Nellie McClung. – Series consists of genealogical information, clippings, memorabilia and photographs relating to Edward Parker Gardiner, Mary Jane Meters Gardiner and the Meters/Gardiner families.

Irene Elizabeth Gardiner (Price). – [ca. 1915-1960s]. – 72 cm of textual records and photographs. – Irene Elizabeth Gardiner, 1898-1969, came to Calgary with her parents in 1911 and attended Mount Royal Public School, King Edward High School, Central Collegiate Institute and in 1917-1918, Moulton College in Toronto, Ontario. She was a talented pianist who taught in Calgary and country towns prior to joining The Albertan. She became women’s editor in the early 1920s; then was women’s editor of The Herald from 1928-1930. She was one of the first female members of the Press Club in Calgary. Her brother, Llewellyn M. Gardiner, 1912-1964, with whom she corresponded, was also a journalist in the United States and was editor of the Portland Reporter. In 1930, Irene gave up her newspaper career and married Dr. Harold Warnica Price. From 1930 throughout the 1960s she belonged to a women’s book club. – Series consists of memorabilia, clippings, correspondence, articles and photographs relating to education, personal interests and career of Irene Elizabeth Gardiner (Price).

Mary Elizabeth Price (Burns). – 1939-1959. – 62.5 cm of textual records. — Mary Elizabeth Price was born in 1936 to parents Harold Warnica Price and Irene Gardiner Price. Like her mother before her, Mary Price was a reporter for the women’s section of both Calgary newspapers during the late 1950s, and also taught music. In 1960, she married Peter Burns. – Series consists of scrapbooks, documents and newspaper clippings relating to education, personal interests and career of Mary Elizabeth Price.
